Grace's Corner of the World: Ten Worst Things About Homeschooling


A couple posts ago, we talked about the Ten Greatest Things About Homeschooling. But, let's face it: not everything can be perfect. Today, let's talk about the Ten Worst Things About Homeschooling.

1. A LOT of family time…
2. Mom always knows who did it… always
3. There’s no “the dog ate my homework” excuse… especially if you don’t have a dog
4. People ask questions like, “Do you have any friends?”
5. When you try to tell people that you do have friends, they ask thing like, “Where do you get your friends?”
6. People ask other questions like, “Do you ever leave the house?”
7. People look at you like, “What is this strange creature in front of me?!”
8. When someone asks you where you go to school you have no idea how to answer it, because you know if you say “I’m homeschooled” the conversation will automatically turn against you
9. Your mom (or at least mine) wakes you up at 8 in the morning anyway, even though you can get all your work done in less than two hours
10. Sandwiches for every lunch. Always and forever

Painting Pictures

    I love to write books. In fact, I can’t remember a time in my life when I didn’t love to write. I even attempted to write books before I knew that the space-bar existed. One of the things I enjoy most is what my mom calls “painting pictures” with my words. I love to write about the beautiful golden leaves that rustle in the fall breeze, and the sparkling snow that glimmers in the wintertime frost. But, how do you write a well-structured sentence that is descriptive, that employs interesting word choice, and, most importantly, intrigues the reader and compels them continue reading? In order to write a descriptive sentence, you must first sit quietly and picture the scene in your mind. See the lush, rolling hills and the trickling, crystal stream, and tell your reader exactly what you are imagining. Now, remember that, although you can see this picture clearly in your mind, your reader cannot. The reader relies on you to describe precisely what you are seeing and what they are

Girl Talk: Makeup

I recently got my first tube of lipstick. I was very excited, as I see makeup the same was as I see colored pencils - it's nowhere close to easy, but the process is enjoyable and fun, and it usually turns out pretty in the end (unless I totally mess up and have to start all over). The lipstick I got is a brighter color than I thought it was going to be, but I like it all the same. (lightish style) My little sister doesn't seem too thrilled with the development. Jokingly, she calls it red (although I am CONVINCED it's just a bright/deep pink), and says things like "oh, you don't need it! Why are you wearing it?!"  Since all of her comments are in jest, I take no offense at them. I play along and I laugh, and I pretend to defend myself as if I really care. But the more she does it, the more I realize that girls have to face this in real life all the time. People tell you things like "that color's not good on you" or " way too muc
